This little Superstructs set is a great introduction to the Pinklets series of building toys. Pinklets are kind of like tinkertoys, except that the pieces include a lot of shapes designed to appeal to girls, like petals and flowers, and the instructions and packaging tend to feature models of plants and animals as opposed to focusing on buildings and cars. So if your 4+ year old girl isn't into the typical kind of lego constructions, this might be a great toy for her. The set strikes a nice balance between open-ended exploration and structured building activities. It comes with a book that contains step-by-step instructions for five designs, including the contraptions that are featured in the picture. But it's not hard to figure out how to use the pieces in other creative ways, so the possibilities are limited only by the number of pieces in the set, which isn't so many in this case (the connectors make up a large fraction of the total number of pieces). Fortunately, these pieces can be combined with other Superstructs sets to enable bigger inventions. Overall, this is a great building toy for girls. P&S recommends this for ages 4 and up because the pieces will be a little difficult to assemble for smaller hands.
